Red Flags in Acting Schools and Coaches

Actors should be wary of programs or coaches that:
GUARANTEE of fame or access to Hollywood, industry professionals or some kind of career success. There are no GUARNANTEES in this industry.
DEMAND or PRESSURE actors to keep enrolling in more courses.
BLUR professional and personal BOUNDARIES
CLAIM exclusive relationships with CASTING DIRECTORS and AGENTS. If that's their marketing then you can probably expect their actual teaching expertise is not very strong. Don't be distracted by flashy names and celebrity relationships. Expect schools and studios to have a solid curriculum, lessons and clear statements about what you will be taught.
• Require participation in EMOTIONALLY EXPLOITATIVE EXCERCISES. What you reveal and share about your life is your choice and should be done on your terms. Skilled, qualified and experienced teachers know how to teach emotional work and imagination work with respect and care.
SELL SHORT-CUTS to success and learning. Start being able to spot the differences between flashy marketing ploys and real solid training and education. Remember, anything worth doing well takes work. If someone is trying to sell you on a short-cut maybe you should question why. Perhaps they aren't selling classes and training after all, just a ticket on some ride meant to take you to your dream of being an actor. If that ticket really exists, don't you think everyone would have bought one by now?
